"So, fresh start. Introductions..."
Nick Tricome, owner of this blog. And you can probably tell I like Far Cry 4 by the way I led off this post.Anyway, a bit about me. I'm Temple journalism student from a town just outside of Philadelphia. I do spend a lot of time in the city, however, hence the Broad St. Gamer banner.
I had two primary areas of interest growing up. Sports, mainly hockey, were one, video games were the other. So when I wasn't out at the rink, it was pretty likely I had a controller in my hands, getting lost in the world of whatever game had my attention at the time.
Sports was a big push behind me wanting to take up a journalism major when I got to college. I went in wanting to write about hockey, about the Flyers (the NHL team I've been devoutly following ever since I was three years old). A couple years went by with that idea being the ultimate goal. The thought of writing about video games never really crossed my mind during that stretch...Until now that is.
Full disclosure: This blog's creation is tied to a class, but I see this as something much more than a grade. I see this as my first opportunity to try writing about something that has, and continues to be, a huge part of my life.
I see this as a chance to publicly share my thoughts on the games I've played through, the current happenings within the video game industry, and the games I'm excited to play in future. Hopefully, I'll connect with people who have similar thoughts or opinions while I'm at it, even those who respectfully disagree.
The point is, I want to generate discussion with people who care as much, if not more, about video games as I do. Don't let the Philly-style name keep you away. It doesn't matter if you're from Philadelphia, Los Angeles, London or where ever. If you loved journeying across a dangerous, post-apocalyptic America with Joel and Ellie in The Last of US, freeing Hyrule from the clutches of evil in The Legend of Zelda, saving Princess Peach for the 200th time, just to race go-karts around the Mushroom Kingdom with the giant turtle that keeps kidnapping her, or getting to live out your own basketball career in NBA 2K. Whatever the adventure, whatever the experience, whatever the game, I hope what I put up on this blog is for you.
And even if you're just getting into gaming, I, and I'm sure many others, welcome you with open arms, and I hope this blog can be a tool to help you learn more about what makes games unlike any other form of entertainment.
How I'm going to do all this? Honestly, I'm not really sure. To this point, any writing I've done as a reporter has been pretty fundamental if that's a good way to describe it. I learned the facts, did the interviews, then reported the information I gathered. So this blog is another first in that it's the first time I really get to share what I'm feeling outside my circle of friends, whether or not I like a certain game and why, or how I feel about what a given developer or publisher is doing.
Then there is the question about how to present all of this. Written posts are a definite, but they only go so far. I think far more justice is done for a game when you get the chance to see it in motion, so videos and livestreams on the blog are things that I definitely need to think about. But those are things that will have to be done on the fly.
There is still a lot I don't know how to do, but finding out is the fun part.
I'm looking forward to sharing my views on everything the video game industry has to offer, and I'm just as excited to hear yours as well. Tweet, comment, e-mail, do whatever you feel is necessary.
Now, enough rambling. Let's get going!
